    I think some desal is probably necessary for drinking water--unless we as a nation decide to impose the cost of desert externalities upon people living in the Southwest to disincentivize increased population, which I seriously doubt we'd do--so it would be very helpful to not have to desal water for the purpose of creating inland lakes/marshes.

    This also reminds me of research being done to breed varieties of crops that are tolerant of or even thrive in brackish water.  

    It's time to start letting sleeping dinosaurs lie, lest we join them in extinction by our consumption of them.
