to get the program we have now. And actually the plan I'm eligible for under Obamacare is single payer, it's called Medicaid. Be that as it may, I'm not as big a fan of single payer as many, I'm not looking just to pay less, I want the care to cost less. No profit from healthcare.

Single Provider. Hospitals and clinics all government owned and operated. Doctors and nurses government employees. Government pharmacies and drug wholesalers.

    •  Yeah, health care is fundamentally different (15+ / 0-)

I love it when r's start talking about letting the market sort out healthcare.  I like to ask--
When you have a emergency, how do you shop for the best deal?
Do you know the pros and cons of treatment options for your specific case?
Do you know the price of various procedures?
Can you see what others paid for similar treatments?
If no, how can market forces work?

While they sputter on that one, ask them if the profit motive from the providers might be in conflict with their best interests.  Take two steps back.  You don't want brain splatter as their head explodes.

I find Socratic questions to be much more effective than argument.

    •  Wait, you want that socialized medicine? (7+ / 0-)

What they have in England? That horrid system where mental health is fully covered, where doctors make house calls, where you never have to worry how much it's going to cost if you need to be in the hospital for weeks, where nurses come to check when you go home from said hospital, where most prescriptions are reasonable or free, and where, if you really don't like what your doctor said, you can go find a private one and pay for it yourself and it will STILL cost way less than here?

      That system? I'll take that.

The entire healthcare industry will change, great losses of profits and jobs for a while as it rearranges, salary ranges across the board will be ratcheted back, as will research and development, and we will have affordable, managed, universal coverage.
