    or immigration reform? he proposes what he believes in. and given the widespread public support for a public option, and even majority support for single payer, he could have used the bully pulpit. i do agree that this is a good step toward something better, but we need to be honest about why we don't already have something better.

      (and again, it's just my opinion here) The ACA was the most important piece of legislation that Obama wanted done in his tenure as President. He saw the opening and decided to go for it in a way that would have the best chance of succeeding .

      I think that his learning curve on the whole of governing has been steep when it comes to dealing with Congress. It's hard to imagine how long it takes to learn to deal with those pit vipers and wangdoodles.

      I think that he gamed it out and proposed the thing that he believed was possible in our country at the time with an eye to it's eventually growing as the people became more and more used to it.

      I don't think that we will ever have a true single payer system like England, it's not in our nature. But, I do see a system more like Germany's or Australia's, more like Medicare is now. Govt. basic with your choice of private riders.

        was certainly part of it. but plenty of people warned him about that. it's also just poor politics to start from a compromised position, and negotiate down from there.
