  •  That's the one I always think of. I did see the (9+ / 0-)

original years ago. Not a very scary monster.

[The monster is advancing on the beleaguered scientists]

Beleaguered scientist #1: Think he can read our minds?
Beleaguered scientist #2: If so, he's gonna be pretty mad when he gets to me.

    •  NOT very scary, true - but in some ways a new kind (5+ / 0-)

of movie. the ensemble work was terrific, the movement in the story rarely slows, the characters are more main-street than hollywood, and the whole thing feels more real than most (all?) other movies of the 50s (and a big chunk of the 60s, too).

Also, it was released the year I was born;  though I never cared for "Gunsmoke" (or 'Marshall Dillon'), 'The Thing' is a lifetime favorite that never loses its joy for me (kinda like 'Forbidden Planet', another treasure)

trying to stay alive 'til I reach 65!

everything low key. No starts of horror, no shrieking, just the Air Force with a very weird problem to solve. What I also loved is that the monster was a plant.

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.

...beleaguered scientists.  The people speaking those lines were soldiers - specifically, Army Air Force.

The beleaguered scientists were trying to communicate with the critter, which is how they ended up either dead or injuried.

Yeah, I love the original movie. :)
