  •  Lost a girlfriend over it...but then NO-ONE KNEW (11+ / 0-)

In those pre-internet day, on opening night, no-one knew what was about to happen - not even hard-core SF fans who'd been digging for spoilers.  My date that night never spoke to me again.  Never looked at me, took a bus home by herself, hung up when I called her.

More Alien tid-bits:  The screenplay was written by Dan O'Bannon, whose first film (and film-school co-production w/ John Carpenter) was Dark Star - a fun-house-in-space kinda film;  when it got tied up and un-distributable, he decided to invert it & go voila!  He later said the script was written with Ripley in mind as a woman, but he kept that secret to avoid "issues".

The famous chest-bursting scene was sprung on the cast the same way the film itself was sprung on the public:  ensemble scene, the directorial instructions amounted to:  something will happen during the meal;  just go with it, act natural...
