    and commodities depression in the 1980s and 1990s.  By 1989, petroleum and coal were so dirt cheap it didn't make much economic sense to pursue other energy sources.  Prices started rising in the early to mid 2000s, which is where you see a second wave of advances in alternative sources.

      My father worked on a group with a government grant to come up with a way to get a regular automobile to go 100 miles per gallon. They worked with the big 3 auto companies in the US and came up with many of the technologies that are in use on today's hybrids.

      When they finished their work in the mid 90s, they concluded that, from a market standpoint, it would be foolish to market a car that gets 100 MPG. After all, the only processed liquid on the planet that is cheaper than gasoline is drinking water.
