  •  One of our goals is to expose the myth of the tea (13+ / 0-)

party's strength. Establishment GOP figures fear them because some incumbents were successfully primaried, mostly in 2010 when most people were still very much shell shocked by the deep recession and were looking for someone to blame. After running the country into ruin, establishment GOPers should have expected such turnover.

Other Republicans (like Boehner) think they can co-opt the tea party in order to push the debate over the role of government to the right.  That has met with mixed success.  Yes, the sequester has taken the budget line down to where Paul Ryan wanted it, but getting the Budget Control Act behind him allowed Obama and the Dems to win in 2012 and continue to implement much of Obama's agenda. The sequester itself is unsustainable politically and many GOPers would willingly do away with it.

The tea party also cost the GOP a shot at controlling the Senate in 2010 and 2012.

This shutdown is helping to clarify just why most Americans dislike the tea party.  In the end, the tea party is attempting to fray the sense of unity that binds the country and that will make many Americans uneasy.
