  •  There's potentially a secondary reason (18+ / 0-)

why Boehner's trying not to hold a vote.  Any GOP House member who defects from the caucus and votes for a clean CR is begging for a primary challenger from the right.  Boehner's best chance to keep a majority in the House is to keep those members from voting on a clean CR.

This is a two-edged sword of course, as some of those same members are likely to have a significant challenge from a Democrat in the fall of 2014.  Just like in every other aspect of this farce, Boehner's playing with fire.

in fact, be the primary reason. Peter King, Patrick Meehan, et. al. really do not want to have to vote on a clean CR (else they would have signed the discharge petition).

If there were one, and they were to vote "aye," they would be the object of tealoathing and vicious primaries from the right.  If they vote "nay," as I suspect they would after serious whipping from the leadership, they would be exposed as liars and frauds.

They would much prefer to have it both ways, which necessitates not having actually to go on record.

      •  I think they WOULD mostly stick with Boehner (0+ / 0-)

if push comes to shove.   I suspect Obama would lose that dare.

vote on the Speaker, no majority party would ever do that to it's leader.

    •  Nailed it! (11+ / 0-)

Spot on, mspicata. Either the GOP reps will get a primary challenger from the right if they vote for a clean CR, or a Dem general election challenger reminding angry constituents that the GOP rep voted to shut down the Federal Government.  By Labor Day next year when the Mid Term Election cycle goes into high gear, the constituents will know the GOP anti-Obamacare fear tactics were nothing but lies.  Thousands more in each district will have affordable health insurance, some for the first time.  The Government Shut Down and false statements about the ACA will be hung around their necks either way they vote for the CR.

and they know it.  Obamacare's going to work.  It's going to be really popular.  And it's named after the Democratic President of the other party.

It's fourth-and-80 with 12 seconds left, the balls on their own 15-yard line and the Republicans are down by 400 points.  QB Boehner walks into the huddle where he finds Ted Cruz saying, "Guys!  This isn't over!  We can take the Ref hostage and demand that he give us all the Democrat's points!"

And he's like, "You know... that just might work!"

Take a knee.  It's over.  The only thing that's going to happen now is people getting hurt.  Just take a knee.

    •  Mike Coffman in Colorado (5+ / 0-)

who followed Tom Tancredo is facing a serious challenge in 2014 in a newly redrawn district.  Like Blue Dog Dems in 2010, he is voting himself out of a job in a competitive district.  Hold the vote Mr. Boehner let's see where Coffman stands.

The 27 moderate Republicans who would vote for a clean CR  should form a mini-caucus and notify Boehner that they will become Democrats (or at least caucus with the Democrats) if a clean CR is not put to a vote immediately. They do have the power to unseat Boehner and give Nancy Pelosi back the gavel as Speaker of the House.

It can't be comfortable for moderate Republicans to be associated with frothing at the mouth Tea Baggers. If they are Business Republicans they should feel right at home in the Big Tent Democratic Party. Chances are they would be safer running for re-election as a Dem or Independent than as a Republican.

You just cannot be radical enough for the Tea Party.

    •  Pressure the Mods (0+ / 0-)

The problem is the mods (moderate, corporate Republicans).  They can lose either way but they are  definitely toast if they sit on their hands and vote no on a clean CR.  Nancy is circulating her petition to force a vote in the House while the Senate Dems are pressing a vote on a clean bill.    The good news is the Dems can win back the House based on all the mods losing this current debate.  The bad news is the House will be burned down way before this since the crazy, evil TPer's who have toddler brains will see to it that no matter what the President Promises, maybe even to resign, won't be good enough to suit them.

One way or the other, its really the mods that have to go.  They are worthless, spineless and just craven.

Time to Pressure the mods to standby their country instead of their toddler run party.
