Of course, if Republicans insist on nonsense, there's a way around a filibuster, too. If there's anything worth using the nuclear option on, it's preventing economic catastrophe.
Well sure, but it would still need to pass the House. Not sure if it's worth going through all the drama of the 'nuclear option' for a measure that is doomed not to get a vote in the House.

    •  The nuclear option is worth it in its own right (4+ / 0-)

If this democracy is to have a hope of surviving, we need to start getting rid of options for the minority to veto things.

then it becomes an side issue that ends up clouding, even dominating the discussion.

      •  Majority rule also allows nominations to go thru (2+ / 0-)

Push has come to shove, so lets shove back. We should absolutely go nuclear to pass a clean CR and a debt ceiling increase.

But wait, there's more: judicial and other nominations have been blocked with a vengeance. Once we have majority rule in the Senate, we can fill every damn vacancy with solid, sane, and Progressive appontments, and we should do it ASAP. I hope there is already a list of people to appoint ready to go, and if not, somebody should kick ass and make it happen.

    •  How do you spin it as being a big thing? (0+ / 0-)

I know "Nuclear Option" sounds big and scary when it's some amorphous thing that no one really understands, but unless I'm seriously missing something here what we're actually talking about here is the democrats bringing a vote on the repeal of the debt limit, the republicans threatening a filibuster and "bringing it up for debate" and then instead of capitulating and tabling it Leahy simply says: "Majority is sufficient to end this debate".

That's all there is to it afaik.

Yeah, it allows the republicans to challenge that ruling and instantly lose because they don't have 51 votes, but that's the whole damn thing right?

How the hell do you argue against doing that when the alternative is economic collapse?
