  •  Spam is beloved in the Pacific Islands and SE Asia (8+ / 0-)

it was the first preserved meat that could be stored and used safely in the tropics! It is still a staple in Hawaiian local cuisine. I think.

What annoys me is that corned beef and dried-chipped-beef are now NOTHING like I remember them from my childhood. And DAMN did I love eating dried-chipped-beef leaves straight out of the little jar! The new stuff is squishy with moisture!

Like prunes are squishy these days! I like RESISTANCE when I eat certain things, and I grew up with prunes that were CHEWY, TOUGH, that you had to work at! Can't even find dry prunes in the organic bins anymore!

I don't know where you live, but where I am, you can still get dried chipped beef that's NOT in a jar. Dad loved the way I made shit on a shingle b/c I made my own gravy with the dried chipped beef (that didn't come from a jar, but from a meat and cheese purveyor at the farmers market. It's kind of a local specialty here).

Likewise, we can get real ham, don't need to import it.

I can understand why islanders would like something that stores well. What I don't get is: I have heard that there are feral pigs on the islands, destroying local habitats.

Why not kill and eat them? (And open your own Wild Spam companies?) I bet it would taste better than the original Spam.

probably one of THE most dangerous things even TM Mighty-Hunter-Men HAVE ever done, or WILL ever do.

Also, hunting anything in the Hawaiian tropical jungle is not easy.

You're correct, they love Spam in Hawaii.   Not sure why.

      Have a good day.

I am a work in progress. Still.
