  •  We must not underestimate how much some (4+ / 0-)

people--like the Koch's and their John Birch kindred--literally and passionately HATE the sort of government America has had throughout most of the 20th century.  If you know any serious libertarians associated with the Koch politico-philosophical tradition, they HATE what we we think of as America, and they will delight to harm it--even if it does harm their bank accounts.

Re-read Atlas Shrugged.  Re-experience Rand's boiling vitriol for America.  That is a the emotional environment many of these people live in.  They want to drown the government in the bathtub, and they are SERIOUS.  We are witnessing an ongoing and serious attempt to destroy the government of the United States.

    •  Of course, it's self-obvious that some (0+ / 0-)

people are crazy and self-destructive. (Koch's, etc.)

I don't think the same is true of Gates, Buffett, and most other extremely rich people. Nor are they so helpless as to just wring their hands while the crazies drive the convertible-of-state off the cliff.

I can't help it. I love the state of Texas. It's a harmless perversion. - Molly Ivins

      •  I quite agree. (0+ / 0-)

Most extremely rich people are probably not part of the libertarian fringe.  (Though, to be clear, I don't know any billionaires.  Their country club must not like my jeans.)

By the way, as much as I loved Molly Ivins, I can help it.  I don't love the state of Texas.  It's not a harmless perversion. It's a deeply harmful perversion. I except Austin, of course, which is a different country (or maybe universe) from Texas.
