      Focus on the likelies.

We don't have any Koch brothers to fund this.

I'm already pissed enough t Steve Israel for squandering DCCC resources on an anti-choice Blue Dog on Steroids in a red district in Ohio when we have a great candidate in the state's swingiest GOP -held district — agains a weak, unknown freshman who is playing the "act moderate but vote crazy" game. Slashing food assistance, shutting the government, defunding Obamacare — he's on board.

Ed FitzGerald for governor Of Ohio. Women's lives depend on it.

    •  50 state strat - Agreed! (7+ / 0-)

Like him or hate him, Howard Dean reawakened the grassroots - every ward, every district, every state, on the ground strategy.

Ours is real grass: it requires time, water, some tending, thrives in the sunlight and open air and gets better over time.

Theirs is petroleum based astroturf: it costs a lot to install, breaks down in sunlight, fools no one upon close examination and looks worse over time.

      •  I'm a big fan of Howard Dean's 50 St. strategy (0+ / 0-)

I'm also angry that he was shown the door after his work paid dividends. But nevermind, let's look at what will work best for Democrats.

Just in terms of probability, let's say we run credible candidates in strong Repub districts: usually, they will lose, but sometimes the Repub candidate gets caught with his (usually his) hand in the cookie jar, or with his pants down in a brothel, or an airport bathroom, and we win.

In terms of changing the public perception of the Democratic Party, running credible candidates in blood red districts tells the electorate that there is indeed a choice, and usually some of those wobbly voters decide to vote for the Democrat because they like our message and platform better than what the Repubs have been giving them. At the very least, the Democratic message is heard by many who never heard it before.

Furthermore, contesting red districts forces the Repub donors to spread their money where they never had to before, just because something odd might happen, and the district might go Democratic. Thus, they have to pay to cover the whole field, thus lessening what they can spend in traditional swing districts.

I really hope to see Howard Dean once more at the highest levels of Democratic Party policy and tactical planning.
