    visited Barrow. Thank you for this piece. I appreciate your conundrum over the harvesting of whales... Alaska taught me to appreciate the act of hunting for sustenance. But all these years later, I still deplore the act of hunting for the sake of a trophy.

    I also appreciate your questioning the use of carbon to visit such a place. As a military family, our carbon footprint is far greater than most families... we move often and we move with all our belongings. I often feel like the few things we do to compensate are nowhere near enough. But I also know the act of travel, of meeting people from different cultures, of experiencing a different style of living, is a part of what has helped make me an environmentalist. I wish more people from the US could travel and meet people who think differently than they do. Then they might be more open to the changes that need to occur to save us from climate change. Because it isn't the travel in itself that is the problem - it is the methods we continue to use.

    Enjoy the rest of your time in Barrow! I hope you make some memories of a lifetime.
