  •  Is Deal really that hated? (1+ / 0-)

I've heard that he's corrupt, but he's doing that badly against a little-known (even with a famous last name) state senator?

    •  Do they know he's that type of Carter? (1+ / 0-)

Carter is obviously known in Georgia, but is his family's presence so ubiquitous even now that people think someone is related to Jimmy Carter if they hear the last name?

in the Peach State. He won Georgia both times in 1976 and 1980, the first time winning all 159 Georgia counties. The Carter surname still resonates.

        •  that's not terribly illustrative (8+ / 0-)

how many voters voting in 2014 will have voted in Georgia in 1976?

            But whatever, time will tell.

Deal was up against Jason Cater 46-38, and he had slightly better approvals of 37/40 too - it could be an indication that Deal has slipped slightly, but its probably more likely to do with the poll's margin of error.

But interestingly, Jimmy Carter sported a decent 55/39 approval rating in Georgia:

            Very Liberal: 93-7
            Somewhat Liberal: 80-14
            Moderate: 72 -23
            Somewhat Conservative: 41-46
            Very Conservative 21-72

That's not overwhelmingly brilliant, and its nowhere near Sam Nunn's favourability of 56-12, but its still a decent +16.

I'm asking whether voters--many of whom are probably very removed from the Carter era in the state--really associate the name Carter with the former president. It wouldn't surprise me if they do, but if that's not the case, it might be an indication Deal is fairly unpopular, period, meaning we might defeat him with more than just one person. I think we see something like that in the fact that Generic Democrat does roughly the same as Carter.

If they never heard of him before, but they heard some white state senator named Carter running for Georgia Gov as a Dem?

Chances that he is related to Jimmy Carter are 99%.

    •  He's had troubles (7+ / 0-)

Of the economic variety. He signed an Arizona-style immigration bill after taking office (just like Bentley of AL), which quickly led to a full-blown labor crisis when it came time to harvest crops and suddenly there was nobody there to do it. Food was rotting on the vine, as it were. Same thing happened in AL too.

Not such a good first impression to make on the electorate, though arguably they're being hypocritical since I imagine the bill was pretty popular when Deal signed it.

We should start a meme, labelling the governor "Shady Deal" because of the corruption accusations.

again because of this. Not sure if that's enough for him to lose.

Carter isnt very well known, but I dont know if he is little known. When the very thin Dem bench is discussed, his name is at or near the top along with Rep. Scott Holcomb and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Carter has also done a lot of work on education policy, which gets him on the local news/programs sometimes.
