The R's got their butts kicked. It was the end of Gingrich the politician and the start of Gingrich the green room habitue. The Democrats ran against Gingrich in the next campaign across the country, and it worked a ton better than the Republicans trying to run against Ted Kennedy.

    •  Repubs won 1995 and are winning now. (0+ / 0-)

It is not about specific political personalities, but their filty rich backers.  Over the last 40 years, they have captured the political system and enacted their preferred regressive social and economic policy regardless of the party in control.

The R's got their butts kicked in 2008.  What did we get from the Democrats?  Nothing.

Today's House R's are in gerrymandered districts so safe they are far more concerned about Tea Partiers primarying them than they are about D's.

It ain't 1995.  The social, political and electoral scene are all far different.  1995 was about Clinton gearing up for re-election and R's trying to undermine him.  2013 is about a lame-duck Prez trying desperately to salvage his signature (neo-con written) health reform from R's desperate to create crisis and use that crisis to funnel ever more money to the already rich.

The only question is how far Obama will bend to their demands.  His whole administration has bent so far already to their demands, it is hard to say just how much more icing he can add to that cake.

He's a smart man.  I trust he'll find a way to add a little more icing.

      •  1996: Repubs retained House easily, gained Senate! (0+ / 0-)
Consider what happened in 1996. Voters only threw out three Republican House members just a mere nine months after an extended government shutdown for which conservatives were widely blamed. The GOP even won two Senate seats to extend its majority in that chamber.

          •  Pointless comment. The GOP is doing great. (0+ / 0-)

They have used this strategy for decades.  They will continue to beat the hell out of those of us on the left with it as long as people like you think someone we're winning because they dip in the polls at the moment.

If all we have is the current polling data and snark about how evil Repubs are, we will only see endless repeats of the same cycle.

I guess letting them funnel all the wealth to the top 1% and maintain constant control of the country is all fine by you?

            •  I was being sarcastic (0+ / 0-)

I.e. the electoral victories were based on misdirection over the president's morality. It worked with populism of the worst sort -- a sanctified scold.

              •  Bill's wandering eye wasn't their only weapon. (0+ / 0-)

Moaning over Monica amped up a few Bible-thumpers, sure.

Drowning the welfare state in a bathtub was their real agenda.

They have proclaimed it loud and long as their goal in every shutdown and threatened shutdown or debt default. They'll continue to preach the doctrine and lop bits off the welfare state and working families livelihood with the affable aid of top Dems until and unless change occurs.

Look, I'm as jaundiced as the next progressive. I'm twice as jaundiced as the next Democrat, but you're mixing in the kitchen sink with the plumbing.

        1. The billionaires got their way by being billionaires.
        2. The DEMOCRATS were largely to blame for this by allowing, petting, protecting blue dogs. They're STILL apologizing for #@#$@s like John Barrow ("At least it's a Democratic seat!" and this despite the fact that the sombich voted for the shutdown). The fundamental error of "ours in name will pay off in the great checkers game" is flat out lying to the public.
        3. The billionaires were giving out the money to the "probidness" Democrats and only asking for a few measly votes -- like the loss of Glass Steagall.
        4. The real wilderness years of the R's meant the lunatic cultural movement going to the real grass roots. Progressives yelled, and the Democratic Party said, "Meh. We don't have the cash, for some reason, to fight all across the board, so we're going to concentrate here, and here, and here." The result was the Kansas School Board, and then the Texas board, and the next thing you know it's normal to talk of "teaching the controversy" of evolution.
        5. The Democrats only had so much money, they said, so they couldn't fight for the states, and, besides, federalism was not going anywhere, and crazy tenther supreme court justices would never be passed by the Senate stalwarts. . .right?

Don't mistake the ideology, or the clumsy, clownish, moronic, feckless politicians of the right with money. Money has won.

As long as the Democratic Party refuses to address its love of money, it will never combat "money in politics," and the rest of our descent to militarism (not plutocracy) is written.

        •  What we got here is Militarized Kleptocracy. (0+ / 0-)

The USA always was a gigantic money machine.  Starting in the mid-70s, though, developing countries started cutting in on our action.  Losing some of our market share was and is a historical inevitability.

The financial elite sulked and moped over our slow erosion in economic supremacy.  But fortunately for them, they had long since captured both parties.  They keep us plebs in line by selling us Chinese-made cyber-bling on the cheap and locking us into every crappier jobs under the constant menace of getting replaced by an app or an underpaid child laborer in foreign climes.

Meanwhile the ramrod laws through their paid flunkeys in Congress, state legislatures and the Supremes to force all to kowtow now and evermore before the great God Mammon.  They'll happily continue until the whole planet is a freakin concrete-encased overheated underwater suburban sprawled minimall because, you know, "The System Works™", "It Is The Best We Can Do™", "There Is No Other Option™", "[insert here your preferred dismissive cliche expressing the irrevocability of a nasty, unjust world from the perspective of one who must unfortunately and with a heavy heart profit immensely from all the nastiness and injustice].
