That the President, Reid and Pelosi and Company hand them not a life preserver, but an anvil and a smile as they sink under the waves :)

the GOP crazies in the House hold their ground (as they likely will), do not provide a clean CR and/or clean debt-ceiling hike and insist (as they likely will) on some small but measurable amount of ransom from POTUS?  What should POTUS do?  Should he hold his ground based on principle and watch the U.S. and world economy crater, wiping out the financial savings of a vast swath of American citizens and plunging a huge amount of otherwise middle-class Americans into abject poverty?  Or should he give into the crazies and pay the small but measurable amount of ransom?

The choice is not as easy of it seems.  It's also not much different than what is presented to a parent when a child is kidnapped and a ransom is demanded.

We are not living in a theoretical world.  If the U.S. goes into default, every aspect of our financial lives will be irreversibly altered for the worse.

The lunatics are running the asylum. Remember that the Tea Partiers have been salivating at the prospect of destroying the federal government since they were elected. Boehner has no control over his caucus. I honestly believe they want an apocalypse. They believe their own bullshit, and now their moneyed creators can't even control them. Inside their bubble, everyone is agrees with them.

minute, get the Dem votes he needs to avoid default, and find some way to label his failure a win.  He is most interested in himself, future paychecks, his reputation and his legacy.  He's doing that double speak because he's trying to hold on to his seat, but in the end, he won't want to be the one held responsible for a default.  Also, the closer we get to the deadline, the more big donors will vow to withhold future donations, and work for sane Republicans--or even Democrats--if the GOP follows through on their threats.  In the event we DO default, it will only be a matter of hours or days before they call it off.

You are right, it is like a kidnapped child.  But giving in is like getting the child back, and letting the kidnapper go on to snatch your other children, one by one.
