  •  Post a recipe for red ears (6+ / 0-)

I lived in Florida for 32 years, and the one great truth was that Crackers will eat anything, and they love turtles, mostly softshells.  Just like the redfish, if you create a popular dish using red eared turtles, they will become endangered!

a little guilty eating it.  ;)

Florida has indeed taken your suggestion sort of, though--they have published cookbooks with Lionfish recipes, hoping people will eat them out of existence.

There was a group of coastal restaurants that sponsored an annual spearfishing for Lionfish with a respectable prize for the most brought in, and for the largest fish, in West Palm Beach.  My recollection is that the winner was often in the hundreds of fish for a four hour event!
There is also an effort to hunt pythons, though it is less successful - pythons hide well in shallow water.  A python hide from a large snake can be worth two thousand dollars!
