  •  Where are the State Police and FBI? (6+ / 0-)

Clearly local law enforcement is under suspicion of wrong doing and corruption, it is the higher police force's job to investigate and make sure elected officials are safe from criminal threat by sheriff nut ball.

      Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

PA ain't got nuthin' on him, if ya know what I mean.

Where are the state police there? Why does it require the Feds to take him down -- and the federal justice system, at that?

If it has taken this long to bring down the renegade from AZ, whose jurisdiction is much larger than the renegade chief from PA, then it's no surprise that renegade sheriffs/chiefs all over the place think they can get away with declaring martial law in their small jurisdictions.

      •  I'm not an expert (0+ / 0-)

but the state police force in Arizona (technically the Arizona Department of Public Safety) is quite small and I believe is tasked mainly with highway traffic enforcement. It didn't even exist prior to 1968. The vast majority of law enforcement outside the cities is carried out by the county police forces, one of which (Maricopa) has Arpaio as the head.  Essentially, the county plays the role that the state police do in other states.

There is a real question why the state AG hasn't been involved, but that's perhaps not surprising given Arpaio's popularity (at least until recently) in Arizona's most populous county.  Even Napolitano courted and received his endorsement for governor in 2002, and adopted a lot of his anti-immigration rhetoric as governor (suing the federal government for incarceration costs, using the state National Guard to patrol the border, etc).
