    when I was between colleges.  The first thing they taught me was how to tell a bug's year.

    I was going to guess '62 before I saw your first line but the key determinant is the door handle (which is out of view).  By far, they changed the most.

    In the early '80s, my young sons and their friends use to play a game called "punch buggy."  If you were the first to spot a VW bug, you announced it, including its color: "Punch buggy blue!"  And you were allowed to punch your friend.  That's how rare they were.

    Fifteen years later, I moved to the Bay Area and on my first weekend in Santa Cruz (a notoriously hipster town), I saw 6 VW bug convertibles, tops down.  I just had to call my now-grown kids.

    Guns don't kill people but there's always one there at the time of death.
