    It's an occupation. To go viking was on a trading mission (which, at least for some, also meant raiding).

    It's an obsolete profession, and yes, one strongly associated with a specific ethnolinguistic group in a specific time period, but in the end, it's more like a Cowboy, '49er, or a Packer than the offensive team name.

      The one possible way that Native Americans might make an acceptable mascot is if one looked into history with an honest eye and chose a group of elite Native American warriors who were admired rather than held in contempt. Apaches or Comanches, for instance -- or even better, Koitsenko.
