  •  About that Premium Estimator (3+ / 0-)

I've been trying so hard to be patient with this botched roll-out.  It was such an obvious miss not to have a Premium Estimator from Day One because then the buzz would have been more about the rates than the glitches.  The first thing everyone would have done would have been to go see what kinds of pre-subsidy rates they could get.  That would have changed a lot of naysayers to yaysayers about Obamacare in a matter of days.  It would have been priceless publicity, literally priceless because there is no kind of publicity or campaigning you could buy or volunteer that would have been so effective at changing so many minds so quickly.

The way they went instead, it's STILL impossible to see actual quotes until you've waded through all the errors.  Now I've got 25+ hours in this process and I still haven't seen a single real rate through healthcare.gov.  The government needs to be demanding some contractor clawbacks.

So now they introduce the Premium Estimator at last.

But guess what:  there's no question about your age.  The numbers on the Premium Estimator at the moment are meaningless averages or composites  that will correspond to almost nobody.  I already know from other sources that based on my age, my rate will be twice what the estimator is telling me.

Why even add this if they couldn't add it right?  Well, I already know the answer to that.  Someone at a high or a middle level overrode the objections of the people who had to implement it and who said they'd need more than overnight to make it work right.  The higher-up said, "Look, at this point ANYTHING is better than nothing.   Just add it."  So they did.  But the higher-ups were wrong.  These fake numbers are actually worse than no numbers.  They'll only increase the snafu buzz.  Especially young people (below the mythical "average applicant age" will say "Wow, that's worse than I'm paying already!"  And those without insurance already know that Obamacare will be their salvation.  Those minds are not where the publicity battle is being waged.

I remember when various health insurers' own fledgling websites were every bit as crappy as healthcare.gov has been so far.  But that's not what people see or remember.  They're going away saying, "I guess the Republicans were right -- government really CAN'T do anything right."

    •  HSS is doing what the Republicans failed to do (0+ / 0-)

That is, discredit this vital program.  The people who handled this have done the Republican's work for them -- better than the Republicans could ever have done it themselves.

I hope it will rise from this rollout crash, but damage has already been done to "the brand" that can only be repaired by a long stretch of phenomenal competence and good luck.

    •  I've already accepted (0+ / 0-)

I've already accepted that there will probably have to be a reset and I'll have to go through the whole damned account-creation and application process again.  The personal data I see is inconsistent from login to login.
