I don't believe that offering Social Security cuts was a good way to prepare for a strong election challenge.

The idea that moving to the right, or the center, or whatever, is always the way to prepare for a strong election challenge, is quite wrong. It depends on the situation, and the issue.

In this case, attacking the New Deal was not likely to be popular, something that Obama seems either not to realize or not to care about. And his similarity, as he put it, to Gov. Romney on Social Security policy didn't help him. Since Romney nominated earned-benefits-cutting Ryan, he lost 13 points with seniors. He regained them after Obama announced that they held the same position on Social Security.

It would have been far better to tell them that the Republicans were demanding Social Security cuts, and if they didn't get them, they were threatening to default, but that he refused to let them take Social Security hostage.

I tried to go online to find a similar bear head...but when I searched “Big Bear Head” it gave me a San Diego craigslist ad entitled “Big Bear needs some quick head now” and then I just decided to never go on the internet again.--Jenny Lawson
