  •  I know many assemblymen and senators, personally, (0+ / 0-)

because I am politically active.  Democracy, not being a spectator sport, is influenced when I act, locally and on a statewide level.  I'd rather have my Legislature pick my senator, over a largely uninformed electorate that can be influenced by a slick ad campaign.   At least they would have to answer, locally.   At large Senators elected popularly, i.e. Ted Cruz, do not.

I not only respect the process, I understand it.  Peace.

    •  That works when there are honest legislators and (0+ / 0-)

honest business people involved.  You may have your locale's best interests at heart, not just your own.  What about states like Wisconsin, where the Tea Baggers have a lock on the state but not the Senators?  The reason why the choice of Senators was taken from legislatures and put out for popular vote was precisely because it became so blatantly corrupt and dishonest.  History matters.

The other problem, as I see it, is that you are distrusting and even denigrating democracy itself.  Quite often, large groups of people can make good decisions.  Maybe not the best in your eyes personally, but the best for them.  I happen not to agree with everything my elected representatives do (who does?) but I trust the process of democracy.

      •  It's too easy to fool enough of the people enough (0+ / 0-)

of the time to eff things up.  "Best for them", personally, is not always what's best for the Nation.

I used to trust the process a lot more.   Then I realized how much I was being lied to.
