    I just don't think it's a BFD. To me what it says about improvements in their ability to detect things like exosolar water--which sounds fairly incremental & not exactly breaking news--is more significant than the actual discovery.

    I really am waiting for them to develop the ability to find that free O2--probably via absorption lines in the atmosphere of a planet in transit. Detection thresholds must be a bitch--they may need something like the Webb (if they ever get around to launching it).

      that its one little chink in the dam,  and the science itself is way over my head, but it seems to me that the certainty about the foundation they're perched on let's people see further,  clears the little details out of the way so they can grasp the next big thing.  

      And if being first, even in little things isn't somehow inherently important to humans, why do people put so much effort into being first, watch little kids at play.
