  •  A huge dilemma (5+ / 0-)

Since the great party realignment after the civil rights movement, the GOP leadership has always been able to convince their white working-class base to vote for the economic interests of the wealthy by stoking the cultural identity/hatred interests of their working-class. GOP leadership has always been able to keep those interests from colliding, until now.

The Tea party is the embodiment of a direct threat by their white working-class base to the economic interests of the wealthy elites. This must be a huge dilemma for the GOP leadership, as they still need their base in order to win a fair one person, one vote election - which, by the way, explains some of their other undemocratic initiatives.
