The Tea partiers, the religious right, the racists, the nuts, the fanatics ...

They're just starting to figure out what we on the Left have seen clearly and been saying for decades:

The Republican Establishment doesn't care about them.

The Republican Establishment has, in fact, contempt for them.

They are just starting to understand that they've been used.

And to make things worse, they are starting to sense -- (although I'm sure they won't think it through far enough to go to this logical, embarrassing conclusion) -- that they've been stupid enough to fall for it.

And worse still, they're starting to realize and sense that the liberals who have been noting it all along have yet again turned out to be right.

And ... deep-down they are royally embarrassed that they've been taken in;  and as usual, embarrassment and shame lead to being royally pissed off.

say that they are royally embarrassed. These people are too ignorant to be embarrassed. If they were, they would have to accept some responsibility for being wrong, and they won't. They're just going to widen the scope of their senseless anger and hatred.

      •  I meant embarrassed in the "not conscious of it" (4+ / 0-)

        sense.

No, they're not consciously embarrassed.  You're right about that.  That's the thing about denial.  If you were conscious of the thing you're in denial about, it wouldn't be denial.  Yet ... it's still in there, and deep-down they know it ...

... because ... by the same token, you can only be in denial about something that you know deep-down is true.  You can't be in denial about something you honestly don't know.  ("What's the capital of New Zealand?"  "I don't know."  "You're in denial!!")

That's the paradox of shame/low-self-esteem and monumental conceit:  It is the people who deep-down feel like the lowest of the low who appear to have the greatest, most overblown self-esteem.  They are the ones who are never wrong, never make any mistakes, and who aren't responsible for anything.

They are the ones who never have to apologize.  They would rather hammer nails into their own head than admit a mistake or apologize.

(I'm writing this from my experience counseling domestic violence abusers ... and I've often here noted the parallels between them and the modern GOP.)

you comment really has the feel of truth to. we all know they have been using them for years but THEY ARE STARTING TO REALIZE  IT is something I thought was impossible. It looks like I was wrong again. If you are right this changes the whole ballgame.

... teetering on the brink -- whose denial is finally cracking ...

This could go either way.  They could follow through and accept reality, no matter how much it hurts;  or the truth could be so scary and threatening that they might retreat even further into irrationality, distort reality even more ... and frankly, become even more dangerous.

Unfortunately, with a mob mentality to reinforce itself, I would predict the second.
