    of connecting this to the international labor movement as Ex Pat does above is also important. One of the problems, of the US labor movement, is that it forgot the "International" at the end of the different unions names and we just began to focus on the US. So when the to a great degree the nature of the labor movement changed over the years, as new and different groups came to this country integrated into the unioins (women and people of color)  , or the jobs and struggle shifted overseas to other countries, we somehow disconnected ourselves from this ( though I love Charles Kerrigan's work on sweatshop labor). Anyway, even as we struggle to recapture class consciousness in our own labor unions, we have to somehow keep the large picture in mind.
