  •  I should add...the only reason McConnell is (19+ / 0-)

in such a position is not a result of the electorate as it is in the House. It is because Democrats wont take away his power to filibuster. So they're going to have to eat some shit for that dumb ass decision. But I expect they wont eat the hole sandwich. Perhaps Hershey's kiss size.

    •  But even the Hershey's (ass) kiss will be defeat (7+ / 0-)

if they allow it. Point is, the Repugs will come back for more next time if there's any capitulation to the "we need to save face" bullshit -- ANY. And the Dems just can't help themselves.

They should have been counter-offering with asking for more of what their base wants, not just using the Repug position as a starting point. Instead, as always, the ratcheting down will continue, even if a little less than last time.

      •  Look, you gotta know when you've won (27+ / 0-)

and bank the win. This is as clear a win on a budget matter as Democrats have gotten since Obama took office. And we got major political damage to the GOP to boot, putting us back in contention next year.

Just bank the victory and move on to the next thing dude. You should be celebrating just the fact that this is the first Democrats have ever been united about anything.

        Bank the victory man.

        •  And January = ELECTION YEAR. Will Thugs be able (7+ / 0-)

to turn the narratives around so much in 3 months that it will not kill them within months of midterm?  I doubt it.

Tho, they will bleat all about 'deficit' then rather than ACA, claiming falsely that it is going up and 'a trillion a year', knowing most of the public is utterly misinformed on it.  It is up to Ds to prepare that battlefield now to our advantage.

          •  Dems should suggest the rethugs be locked (1+ / 0-)

into their room until they make up and shake on it before they can come out and rejoin American political life.  The GOP should seek a spot on the Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil's show; they're that dysfunctional.

        •  It's better than normal, but ain't a victory yet! (0+ / 0-)

We have yet to see what concessions this pries loose, or whether the can just gets kicked down the road until the next crisis. You'll pardon my skepticism, but this is still a very fluid situation that is not resolved, and so there's nothing to bank.

Among other things, the teabaggers clearly flexed their muscles and THEY won, in part, by simply being able to force the GOP to shut down the government, despite the resistance by Establishment Repugs. Even if nothing is gotten in return, they will pay no price, since they accomplished the goal of creating chaos. Which means they will be back for more, even if it hurts the GOP (which they SO do not really give a crap about, given their -- teabaggers -- jerrymandered safe districts and Koch bros. et al. independent funding sources).

like the delay of the medical device tax, there is no way in hell the Republicans pull this stunt again during this Congress or the remainder of Obama's term. Boehner chose to adopt the Tea Party's tactics, and it is now evident to everyone (save the teabaggers themselves) that it was a disastrous choice. Between alienating the Tea Party on the one hand, and the general population and (more importantly) the party's financial backers on the other, Boehner now has proof positive that the correct answer is always "Fuck the Tea Party". The Republicans might recover enough to keep the House next year, but only if Boehner never utters the words "government shutdown" or "default on our debt" again. The TP morons in congress will bray, but they will be kept in line. The reactionary base, however, will be harder to control.

        •  It's already given us VA-Gov next month (2+ / 0-)

And probably eaten a big chunk out of the GOP's control cushion in the House of Burgesses.

The only reason it won't do the same in the Virginia Senate is because the Senate won't hold elections this year.

          •  There has been no election in Virginia yet. There (0+ / 0-)

are only polls.  Counting chickens before they're hatched guarantees a loss.

            •  Its over (0+ / 0-)

I haven't been following the race closely, but TMac is ahead in the polls and the dems are on the upswing. No doubt here that the carpetbagging dem party hack from my hometown is gonna destroy the  tea bag local boy

There is truth on all sides. The question is how much.
