    re·fute

    Verb
Prove (a statement or theory) to be wrong or false; disprove.
What they do is reject or deny, but they don't refute.

    •  It can also mean to argue against. (0+ / 0-)

Unless you're a logician, it's not necessarily a strict antonym of prove.

That's the usage I was taught as a copy editor. From the Associated Press stylebook (which most newspapers follow):

rebut, refute Rebut means to argue to the contrary: He rebutted his opponent’s statement.
Refute connotes success in argument and almost always implies an editorial judgment. Instead, use deny, dispute, rebut or respond to.

      •  Even rebut doesn't make the cut (0+ / 0-)

As you say, it means to argue to the contrary which implies the marshalling of facts, preferably some of which exist in the original case, the connection of those facts into an argument leading to an alternative conclusion.

These guys deny, assert and reject, but they don't argue, the certainly don't debate and the only relationship they have with rebut is to stick their head up their own.
