    opened.

I don't think the threats of primaries against the leaders or the kind of insults that are being hurled at John McCain and the non-Tea Partyers will be forgotten anytime soon by those on either side.

It appears to me that the TPers are staging a putsch of the Republican Party. Whether they expel the old moderates or are expelled themselves, who can say?

It seems obvious that whoever is left that would like to remain in the rational world should align themselves with the Democrats and end the shut-down and extend the debt-ceiling. If they were smart, they would extend the debt ceiling until AFTER the mid-term elections so they as a party and we as a country don't have to go through this BS again before then.

the kind of insults that are being hurled at John McCain
John McCain was still best buds with George W. even after this episode.  Thick as thieves, those Republicans.
Rove invented a uniquely injurious fiction for his operatives to circulate via a phony poll. Voters were asked, "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain...if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" This was no random slur. McCain was at the time campaigning with his dark-skinned daughter, Bridget, adopted from Bangladesh.
