for Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions (Penn State) in about 1974?

    That Ditka?

No wonder he has a sense of total entitlement. Paterno's boys could get away with anydamnthing back then. I type this as a graduate of that same university.

If in fact it's a different Ditka, then I dunno.

1961.  He bashed helmets for about 12 years, which explains a lot.

as a pass-receiving tight end, which means that in addition to his blocking responsibilities on the offensive line he had plenty of opportunities to get knocked in the head after catching passes.

His wikipedia page has a section titled "Incidents" detailing moments in his life when he flew off the handle or otherwise behaved in inappropriate ways.

Among the highlights of his career he is the only person in the history of the NFL to win a championship with the same team as both a player and coach, both with the Bears.  The good news is the Bears haven't been back to the Super Bowl since '85...

        •  I don't remember. (0+ / 0-)

I remember there was a Ditka playing, but he was mostly before I matriculated as a student & I've never been a huge football fan.

Still, when you go to a major football school, you have to know a few things, if only by osmosis....
