    and quoted basically summarizes as:

The GOP and the frightened RWNuts are authoritarians. The Tea Party voters are scared at least partly b/c Big Daddy (as they perceive him) isn't in power and telling them -- and the rest of us -- what to do.

And if they don't have someone laying down the law and ORDERING them to Do As I Say, they freak out.

OMG! It's anarchy! People deciding for themselves! No Big Daddy! How shall we survive?

/snark...sort of. They really are authoritarian followers.

But this time, we have to put the reactionary insurgents in their place. 'Cause if they get critical mass by any further tragegy or incident, we stand to lose the whole game. And by "we" I don't simply mean Liberals/Progressives/Democratic Party. No. I mean the whole Nation.

This time, they have more than pistols, they have whole armories of weapons.

Stop the disease of Bagguerism now.

      Ugh. --UB.

    •  The "authoritarian follower" personality (10+ / 0-)

is explicated in Prof. Bob Altemeyer's 2006 book The Authoritarians. Altemeyer says...

The events of 2009 and 2010 have confirmed conclusion after conclusion in The Authoritarians. I wrote in 2006 that the authoritarians in America were not going to go away if they lost the 2008 election, that they would be infuriated if  a new president tried to carry out his mandate. That has certainly been the case....

[The book is a] journey through some very relevant scientific studies I have done on authoritarian personalities....

The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank and file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?

I think you’ll find this book “explains a lot.” Many scattered impressions about the enemies of freedom and equality become solidified by science and coherently connected here.
