    Indeed, Republicans are more radical than they've ever been. You could argue they've made big legislative strides in just the past few years. Then, why do they feel so helpless and so miserable?

    An 80ish family member, according to other family members, "hasn't been himself" since his man Romney lost last fall. He sees his side losing, generally. It is just very painful territory. This pain, multiplied many times over, reverberates all through the Republican base these days, and all through the behavior of McConnell and Cruz and Boehner.

    They long for 1980. And it's gone for good.
