Applying family systems theory to the cure for the identified patient in this national family:

Yes, the rest of the family needs to stop enabling the Republican Base, but the Republican Base also (and maybe first?) needs their feelings acknowledged and validated. They need compassion.

This is a chronic problem with progressives - we are so busy making sure we are factually correct we often forget that other people's emotions (however irrational and illogical) are important. Validating peoples' emotions is required if you want them to be able hear your rational ideas.

      Great observation:

Advocacy works on three human axis:

-reason (And we are good at that one)
-emotion (we need to work harder at this)
-character (we have good character, but our lack of emotional connection makes us elitist)

I still think of a health care discussion I had some time back.  We clashed, but we ended up with a similar emotional state.  They didn't trust government, I didn't trust private insurers, and it all costs too much.

      Common ground.

Emotionally, we were roughly in the same place despite there being significant intellectual differences.

That person today has just started their own business and may well be using Obamacare, despite being a solid conservative.

These people experience "emotional truth" and we rarely get there with them, and they tend to shut down.

They will shut down because they see themselves as people of good character, and sometimes they are.  In the case I'm mentioning here that is true for sure, but I'm not sure it's as widely true as people would want it to be.

However, the intent to be of good character is frequently there, and when we come across as elite, not able to make that emotional connection, they can't see us in the same good character way and barriers go up.
