I was unaware of those recent changes.

(By "worse" I meant worse than the DR, not the rest of the world. As I pointed out, jus sanguinis is the rule in most countries in the world. We are fortunate to live in a country where one acquires birthright citizenship through either jus sanguinis or jus soli. Canada and Mexico have almost identical laws.)

we have jus soli, since I'm not a legal scholar, I would simply assume that because we had a vast continent to fill (once we committed removal and ethnocide against the indigenous) it was a way to gain a population rapidly.

I will probably do some digging into texts on the subject at some point - but it does seem to be a New World phenomena.

a repeal of the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision by the only means available, a Constitutional amendment (the 14th). Chief Justice Taney believed that Blacks had no rights that the White man was bound to respect, and that they were incapable of citizenship. He thus ruled that Congress had no power to make them citizens.

Taney died in 1864, after the Emancipation Proclamation, on the very day that his home state of Maryland abolished slavery, without ever recanting those views, even though he had freed his own slaves. Abraham Lincoln was greatly relieved by the opportunity to replace him with a Chief Justice of his own nomination, Salmon P. Chase.

I thought about putting it  in the diary - but ...there is already so much.

It does illustrate the New World embrace of jus soli quite well.
