And that means the New Deal starts coming down this year.

    •  This confrontation is long overdue (24+ / 0-)

While I respect what president is doing now, he totally misread Boehner and his caucus in 12/10:

Q Mr. President, thank you. How do these negotiations affect negotiations or talks with Republicans about raising the debt limit? Because it would seem that they have a significant amount of leverage over the White House now, going in. Was there ever any attempt by the White House to include raising the debt limit as a part of this package?

THE PRESIDENT: When you say it would seem they’ll have a significant amount of leverage over the White House, what do you mean?

Q Just in the sense that they’ll say essentially we’re not going to raise the — we’re not going to agree to it unless the White House is able to or willing to agree to significant spending cuts across the board that probably go deeper and further than what you’re willing to do. I mean, what leverage would you have –

THE PRESIDENT: [silence].... Look, here’s my expectation — and I’ll take John Boehner at his word — that nobody, Democrat or Republican, is willing to see the full faith and credit of the United States government collapse, that that would not be a good thing to happen. And so I think that there will be significant discussions about the debt limit vote. That’s something that nobody ever likes to vote on. But once John Boehner is sworn in as Speaker, then he’s going to have responsibilities to govern. You can’t just stand on the sidelines and be a bomb thrower.

The sequester "negotiations" that ensued the following summer were bad enough.  The Grand Bargain that the GOP walked away from was even worse, as it included SS and Medicare cuts.

Now, Boehner reneged on a sequester-level CR that Reid agreed to:

SQ: Are you surprised by Speaker Boehner?

HR: Yes. Here's one reason I'm surprised. What we voted on and got out of the Senate is what he told me he wanted me to do! It was hard for me to do that because it was $70 billion less than what our budget was, but we agreed to do that, because he said he needed that to pass a clean CR [continuing resolution]. And now he can't deliver on something he gave me his word that he would do.

      ESQ: When was that, senator?

HR: The last conversation was September 9 or 10. It was a process that had taken place over quite a bit of time, but culminated over those two days in September.

Trying to negotiate w/ this Tribe of Visigoths is like trying to negotiate w/ secessionists.  When a veteran "moderate" (in relative terms) like Hatch says that a default is no big deal, reality really starts to sink in.  You can't compromise w/ people whose motivations are radically different from yours.

It's time to finally do what was inevitable all along.  Mint the trillion $ coin or invoke the 14th Amendment or take some other executive action.  A WH that can claim executive power to launch drone strikes and spy on Americans in order to fight Al Queda sure as hell can claim executive power to stop these economic terrorists from risking a Depression.

      It ain't rocket science.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
