    The University was a place where scholars and researchers taught. They didn't spend all their time teaching; they also did the research and scholarship which later professors would use for teaching.

    It was sort of a cross-subsidy deal.

    Then the businessmen who were the majorities of boards of directors figured out that they could get cheaper teachers if they didn't give any cross-subsidies.

    Now, they are getting cheaper teachers yet, hiring all the guys who wanted to be professors. The research is going to be done by somebody else, or by nobody at all.
