  •  IL-13: Gollin raised $301K, $262K COH (5+ / 0-)

    Link: http://www.news-gazette.com/...

    $165K self-funded, $136K in contributions.

Gollin also released a internal (from the same article) done by PPP with him down 8 to Davis, and Callis down 5:

    Davis - 41
    Gollin - 33
    Davis - 40
    Callis - 35
Not sure I would have released those numbers, but whatever.

    •  Didn't realize Gollin had that kind of money (4+ / 0-)

I do expect Callis to win the primary here though.  The DCCC is very hyped about her candidacy, and she's got EMILY's List as well in her corner.

      •  Champaign has great influence in primaries (2+ / 0-)

Gill won last time vs. a DCCC-backed candidate with significantly more money because he was able to turn out his base in Champaign/Urbana in the eastern part of the district. IIRC Callis is from the western half of the district. Gollin is a teacher at UofI (which is in Champaign.) He's a good candidate to turn out college kids and other urban voters, probably a better candidate for those voters than Gill was. If he does, he'll win.

        •  I also think that makes him a good candidate (3+ / 0-)

in the general election. If he turns out those squishy urban voters that stay home in midterms, that's a big boon to our chances. It also helps there isn't that big of a non-white pop. in Champaign/Urbana. I think Callis is the better candidate on balance, but I think they're both good.

one of the reasons Gill did so well in the eastern part of the district is that he'd been on the ballot multiple times in that part of the district in his previous races, and Goetten (his DCCC-backed primary opponent) had virtually no presence in the eastern part of the district, either organizationally or in advertising (he didn't even visit Champaign/Urbana once during the primary, which is kind of remarkable.) Gollin won't have either the advantage of a lazy opponent or that level of name recognition.

drawn this part of the map a lot better than they did. They could have made this a perfectly safe district but sadly it's a conservadem seat and while Gollin seems like a great guy and that's some truly surprising fundraising, I'd really hate to see us squander this seat again by nominating him over Callis.

I think Callis is the better candidate, but Gollin is a good candidate too, and while I do think nominating him would slightly decrease Democrats odds, it wouldn't be throwing the district away. There are no key qualities Callis has that Gollin doesn't.
