Gov. Cuomo is running harder to the "center" than he needs to, on paper, because it's just so easy for a politician from an iconic, politically monolithic state like New York to be stereotyped, in today's age of uber-polarized political and regional factions, as a "Noo Yawk City librul!1" on the national stage. It's the same reason why no one from San Francisco or Alabama is going to be elected to the White House anytime soon.

Cuomo thinks he can circumvent that "bad rap" by governing from what is New York's center-right, but really, the likely end result is that his name is mud with both progressive activists and many Democratic mandarins irritated at his efforts to sabotage the state party, and he still winds up having little crossover appeal to swing voters in "Middle America" who see him as a typical left-wing East Coast city slicker.

Pragmatic progressive. Oregonian, Cascadian, and American. Keeper of the DKE glossary.
