The former hard-right coalition's stance was no surprise. But here's a recent law, enacted with a coalition that's nominally 40% center-left

Israel Passes Law Banning Undocumented Immigrants From Sending Money Out Of The Country

      By Maya Shwayder
      on June 04 2013

...The law, passed Monday and aimed at deterring emigration from Africa, was originally proposed in late 2012. It forbids the withdrawing of funds by immigrants, dubbed “illegal infiltrators," in amounts larger than twice the minimum wage he or she earned during their time in Israel times the number of months they were in Israel...

It carries a penalty of a 14,000-shekel fine (about $3,800) and up to three months in jail for any immigrant and a 30,000-shekel fine and up to a year in jail for any Israeli citizen helping an immigrant to transfer money out...

The law further allows a policeman or customs officer to seize a migrant worker’s property without a warrant

That's the product of one Google search.

I sympathize with your emotional identification with Israel and your wish to shield it from what you see as slander.

But the Israel that really is, might not be the one you imagine - and therefore what you imagine as slander might actually be true :(

40% number I stand by my earlier post.

While, if I were to agree to the characterization as 'center-left' of the 40% composition of those that voted in favor, I would find it much higher than I would like to see.

I would still point out to you that 40% is not a majority and as such one cannot accurately state:

Unrestricted by the center-left’s pretensions to tolerance
The majority of those in the 'center-left' coalition OPPOSED the law.  The quoted statement is false, troubling if I were to agree it was truly center-left I admit, but false nonetheless.
