Re-enactments include the 1864 massacre of African American troops at Fort Pillow? Or the seizure of free blacks who were dragged into slavery when Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army retreated back to Virginia following the battle of Gettysburg? Or the explosion of the S.S. Sultana’s boilers in 1865, when an estimated 1,800 Union soldiers were killed?

No doubt it’s hard to find modern African-Americans willing enough to play slaves alongside modern white Americans playing Confederate soldiers; in the actual Civil War, though, slaves often did all the hard work and toting, sometimes carrying their master’s musket, blanket roll, cooking utensils and the like.  Because, you know, freedom.
