I recall that among the items reportedly found at the home of OKC bomber Terry Nichols back in 1995 were rolls of Mercury dimes. He and McVeigh followed some book about the coming end times race war or whatever. After they have invested so much in dehydrated food, precious metals and ammo, it's tough for survivalists not to root for disaster.

It's like the old Peanuts cartoon where someone asked Linus if he really believed in the Great Pumpkin. Linus replied, "Of course... I've already sent out 57 pumpkin cards--it'd be an economic disaster for me not to believe in the Great Pumpkin."

I know some of them.  And they've gone from quirky oddballs who just want to be prepared to batshit insane idiots who are actively rooting for the end of times.  Or when the SHTF or whatever their stupid acronym is.  It isn't enough for them to have the stuff stored away in old bomb shelters.  They need to use it in order to validate their world view.   They are some scary people.

    •  The book is 'The Turner Diaries' (4+ / 0-)

It was written by William Luther Pierce (under the penname Andrew Macdonald). He also wrote 'The Hunter' which is about a Vietnam Vet who kills mixed race couples.

Pierce's claim to fame was the desire to build a white nationalist movement. He was a white power fanatic in the guise of an even-tempered intellectual.

Timothy McVeigh was a big fan.
