  •  To the fine conservative ranchers of SD (10+ / 0-)

You want to call yourselves conservatives, with that whole rugged individualist and self-reliant shtick and the F-350's, leather boots and Stetsons you wear indoors where they serve no purpose? Fine, whatever, everyone's allowed their little identity reinforcing affectations. Just don't come begging the federal government one day and then trash it the next because FreeDumb. You look like schmucks and don't win any credibility points.

You're either part of the national community or you're full of shit. Ok?

    Grow the fuck up.

    •  LOL (0+ / 0-)

I'd love to see you try ranching without leather boots and a cowboy hat.

As an urbanite raised in the biggest cities in the world, I bought a sheep ranch.

And I soon learned the absolute necessity of leather boots to protect the feet and a good hat that would keep both the rain and the sun off the front and back of my head.

I'd love to see you go out in fields with your high heels or work in a field all day long in a baseball cap.

form with function, of making more of those leather boots and Stetsons than they were, functional attire suitable to their field, and not some sort of he-man rugged individual macho pose. I.e. the man makes the man, not the attire. It's that whole John Wayne/Clint Eastwood bullshit about the strong and silent type who doesn't need all that fancy pants city slicker doubletalk to be a real man, that a lot of conservatives (the vast majority of whom are not cowboys, ranchers or farmers) buy into and that posers like Reagan and Dubya cynically exploited. Being a skilled and responsible rancher doesn't make one an expert in governance, tax policy or the budget, any more than being an accountant makes one an expert in sailing. These people hate government, except when they need it. The hypocrisy is pathetic, and no amount of macho posing can change that. My point, in case it's not obvious, is that the GOP likes to play up the whole tough guy self-reliant "Real American" stereotype, but at the end of the day their supporters need government as much if not more than Dems.

Btw, I ordered a pair of leather boots today. Well, semi-leather, more suitable for winter storms and cold weather than ranching. But they won't make me any manlier or more of an expert on policy.
