  •  I'm thinkng of my SD relative... (14+ / 0-)

...who posted something on FB asserting that people on welfare don't want to work, and blocked me when I pointed out that MY state's Federal tax surplus helps South Dakota.

So yes, a lot of them really do think that they work hard and the single mother on relief doesn't.

PS: I was born in SD & haven't lived there for 50 years. But I visit regularly & have plenty of relatives there. Nearly all of them are reasonable people, who may be conservative but who believe in reality.

is anything like rural Oregon, most of those rancher's white daughters are pregnant before they finish high school.

      •  I can't speak for western SD ranchers... (1+ / 0-)

But I can say that your description doesn't match the farm families that I know in eastern SD. And I expect that access to birth control varies FAR more in different social/cultural groups than does involvement in high school sex -- which isn't the fault of the high school kids.

So let's let go of these stereotyped putdowns. They don't help anyone. Certainly they don't help the people who are being stereotyped to see progressives as being on their side.
