something we need to watch out for ourselves.  The conservatives got where they are today because they started with a conspiracy theory about the media.  They told themselves that the media is biased (and sometimes it is) and dishonest, and this authorized them to ignore anything in the media that didn't fit their narrative and set of ideals about how reality should be.

Conspiracy theory of this sort-- as well as the attribution of motives to others --are extremely corrosive to the possibility of reality based, rational thought.  At the level of motive attribution we get things like the following:

Rightwing:  "despite the fact that I have no evidence for it whatsoever, I just know Obama is bent on enacting socialism, destroying Christianity, or taking away all our guns!"

Democratic party purist version:  "Even though I have no evidence for it, I just know those progressive critics of Obama just hate him and are doing everything to tear him down!"

If this form of motive attribution is so corrosive, then it's because it allows someone to reject any set of facts they don't like or that don't conform to their initial assumptions about the motives of the person.  Likewise with the premise that the media is intrinsically up to no good.  This is why I get really worried around these parts when I see certain diaries talking about propaganda and panopticons, as that way of conspiracy theory is the road to dismissing any facts not convenient to our worldview.  It's not that we shouldn't be aware of media bias; it's that we need to exercise extreme care to avoid that way of thinking that allows us to dismiss things from the outset.

In truth, we all have preconceived notions that are resistant to facts--call it religion, superstition, bias--and often we make the opposition to be more monstrous than they actually are.  Sadly, this time they are monsters, sadly this time truth is too befogged for many to accept.  Some still deny evolution---they don't want to believe in climate change--they do have false gods--capitalism.
When we were so rich in natural resources, our governmental follies could be overcome.  No longer true--and either the system changes or we disintegrate.  All empires fell for similar reasons--the elite became soft and blind.  Building the 1% has to lead to fiddling while the country burns.  Selfishness breeds contempt which breeds denial of truth.  Too much self esteem is a bitch.

Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. John Kenneth Galbraith .
