Your Subaru does have a great part-time 4WD system that was pretty popular with skiers and surfers in the wagon version, but the all wheel drives of Audi (Quattro) and Mercedes (4matic) also have automatic power regulation (Audi electric, Benz mechanical), so if you ever need to replace it, you have alternatives.

But hands-down, the best performing all wheel drive vehicle are made by Benz. What to buy when an Outback or GL won't do the job?

    Unimog, of course.

And when a Unimog is too wimpy or is not big enough for your entire clan/village? Zetros.

But if you want something smaller, there is always the LEGO Unimog.

      •  Legs. (0+ / 0-)

If you have the time, nothing beats legs. They go anywhere.

Mrs koNko is actually a mountain girl and like a diesel powered tractor, same speed regardless of the grade.

But she's the one with the soccer mom SUV, I ride a bike and haven't owned a car for 20+ years (when I live in CA).

But Unimog is not of military origin. It was originally designed as a multipurpose farm vehicle, one part tractor, one part wagon, with drive shafts to power implements, and it's still mainly used for utility applications although some people use the small model as an SUV. Like Arnold; so if you have $250k, you can hang with Gov. Terminator.
