  •  The deal that's emerging seems doable (9+ / 0-)

Yes, it's short-term and we could be doing this all over again in a few months.

    BUT:

1 - The GOP is sure to think twice about pulling this again given how poorly it was received this time around, and...

2 - That'll be several months closer to the '14 elections and after the holidays, when people will be thinking in terms of next year and not this past year.

3 - That's precisely when the next round of sequester cuts is supposed to kick in, giving Dems negotiating leverage they don't have now.

I just DARE Repubs to do it again so soon. May they be so stupid.

They presuppose that the current breed of Republicans driving this blackmail operation are rational thinkers. They may well be rational, in terms of being within their little bubble universe of thought, but for the rest of us, dealing with them is like trying to convince a Klingon that working out an weapons control agreement doesn't require actually using those weapons in the process.

      •  All that's needed is 20 Repubs + Cantor (0+ / 0-)

And Cantor is many things, but crazy isn't one of them. He's in this for the long haul. He knows that Boehner's not long for the speakership and Ryan's an idiot and is angling to replace Boehner, and he surely knows that default isn't the path to it. Of course, Cantor might be trying to set Ryan up and may be willing to use default to make it happen. But he also knows that it would lose Repubs the majority, so he'd be minority leader or even just whip if they default. Any way I look at it, the GOP simply isn't THAT crazy.

    •  The deal that's emerging is fine (3+ / 0-)

And could've been passed weeks ago.

The problem will be if the deal goes anywhere in the House.

You've got Paul Ryan there a few days ago ginning up the rabble by trying to bring back the birth control issue!

They may believe they can get these concessions, but most likely it's for show, and when the midnight hour comes, they'll cave. There simply aren't enough crazy Repubs to kill a last-minute deal. It's going to happen. Even Ryan knows that default is political suicide for him & the GOP. He can read polls, unskewed.

        •  I hope you're right, but... (0+ / 0-)

...a lot of people said the same thing about the shutdown itself.

And even if they take a midnight deal on the debt ceiling, can anyone seriously guarantee they won't drag out the shutdown for a couple more weeks just because they can?

          •  We've had many shutdowns before (1+ / 0-)

We've never had a default. EVER. Big difference. And even they know it. Come the drop dead hour, they'll cave. Not enough of them are that crazy.
