    as New York subway graffiti, by two separate writers -- probably sometime in the late 1950's, early 1960's.

      I'm not really sure where it first appeared, because I have seen it credited to many people...including Groucho Marx.  I know it was used as a test of how well Artificial Intelligence programs could glean the meanings of the two sentences.  I do know that Townes said it, though, because I heard it :)
