  •  Here's the deal. This isn't complicated. (4+ / 0-)

They intend a shutdown and a default. All Republicans in the House except for 17 want a shutdown, and secondarily, a default.

This crushes the government, and the Obama presidency.  All that Obama has is the "power of the poll" -- that is, perhaps a majority of Americans don't like the way Republicans are dealing with all of this.

But many also buy the idea that this is a stalemate between two unreasonable parties (Republicans and Democrats).

Get ready to go over the cliff, Thelma.

If you hate government, don't run for office in that government.

    •  If Obama convenes House (10+ / 0-)

and GOP does not attend, 218 is a quorum. 18 Republicans and Nancy can start bringing bills to the floor.

      •  Yes. And she can produce a coin..... (0+ / 0-)

....from her pocket worth ONE TRRRRRRILLION dollars and hand it to the President who will then pay the nation's bills with it.

Look, I appreciate your understanding and explanation of the nuances of what COULD happen.

This won't happen because the Republicans will NEVER allow America to see Democrats providing a functioning House of Representatives.

And, because they don't want the shutdown to end.  And they want to throw the nation into economic chaos. Obama seems incapable of uttering the words that would convince America Republicans are to blame and acting in bad faith.

        •  If you start blaming Obama for not (23+ / 0-)

"uttering the right words" I'm going to wonder what planet you inhabit.

There are perhaps 25% of Americans still giving any support to the Republicans. That 25%, if Obama gave a speech that combined Shakespeare, Churchill, and ML King into one surpassing flood of soaring rhetoric, would respond by ...

          supporting the GOP some more.

...whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

it's because he won't use the trillion dollar coin bensdad is mocking to make this shit stop at least long enough to get the gun out of the Republicans' hands--because it's silly.

at this point, I think both our bondholders and the rest of the world generally would be grateful for anything, even a trick, that would get the gun out of the hands of the crazies and prevent the world from going into economic meltdown.

Minting a platinum coin is better than cutting Granny's Social Security benefit, or satisfying the Republicans' other ransom demands. Just fucking do it. Or you could look noble, righteous, and statesmanlike while the world goes over the cliff into economic chaos.

I tried to go online to find a similar bear head...but when I searched “Big Bear Head” it gave me a San Diego craigslist ad entitled “Big Bear needs some quick head now” and then I just decided to never go on the internet again.--Jenny Lawson

        •  I don't get (5+ / 0-)

why you are so insistent that we're going over the cliff? You were pushing similar guff yesterday, in similar "declaratory" language.

It's like you think you KNOW all of what there is to know in this situation. And frankly, I don't think you do.

This all started with "what the Republicans did to language".

    •  An Irish friend said "We shoot ourselves (4+ / 0-)

in the foot.  You bloody shoot yourselves in the head."

If the Republicans do indeed drag this out and default, they'll have shot themselves (not the government and not the President -- based on history) in the head.
