  •  Guilty pleasure & amends of NJ Dem voters? (4+ / 0-)

    Perhaps the apparent absence of

Gov. Chris Christie's expected easy re-election ... coattails downballot for legislative Republicans
...reflects that ticket-splitting Dem voters feel a bit guilty for lining up to give Christie a big win and launching pad for Presidential run, and are trying to make amends by voting Democratic down ballot.
    •  I think it's much simpler than that (6+ / 0-)

Personality politics.  It's been here for a while, and it's only gotten stronger as we have transitioned into 24/7 campaign cycles and social media.

How else can you explain Cory Booker winning by 10-12 points and then Gov. Christie set to win by 15-20 points?

That's why "Generic Dem/Repub" polls have limited usefulness.  No one goes against a "generic" opponent - you are matched up against an actual person.

Christie's blustery attitude contrasts significantly from Buono's calmness.  And in New Jersey, blustery wins every single time.  Trust me, I grew up there.

Sure, Buono got her knees cut out from her by all the corrupt machine Democrats, but even with their support she wouldn't have done much better than 10 point loss.

      •  It was interesting... (4+ / 0-)

I talked to a freshman at UCLA who's from New Jersey, specifically the Seaside Heights area that got fucked up badly during Hurricane Sandy.  This student would be considered left of center, but not as left as most of us on DailyKos.  She said she's not voting in the election, because Christie's gonna win anyway.  But she said if she did vote, she'd vote for Christie.  And for her, it all boils down to his actions during and after Sandy hit.  None of the stuff about his stance on unions, transportation, gay marriage, women's rights, etc., none of it matters to her because of Sandy.

        It is what it is.
